It’s Not About You

When you finally learn that a person’s behavior has more to do with their own internal struggle than it ever did with you…

You learn grace.

~ Roger Wolsey

I saw this quote posted on a friend’s page on Facebook and thought it was a good one to share. This is a helpful perspective when having challenges with others’ behavior.

AND it is a great reminder to reflect upon our own behaviors. Like ping-pong balls, it may sometimes be that their behavior is a reaction to our behavior or vice versa. Though it’s easy to default into the ‘everyone thinks like me’ fantasy, the truth is that our histories, experiences, beliefs, upbringing and perspectives vary greatly.  So it’s important to remember: our behaviors impact others – sometimes directly, sometimes indirectly. It’s just as important to be aware of our behaviors and how they affect those around us as it is to recognize that others have ‘stuff’ to cope with, too.
